Each year thousands of people love to escape NYC and travel somewhere different, normally to warmer climates but in this article we are going somewhere closer to home,  however still a different country. Toronto in Canada is only 90 minutes flight time of 8 hours driving from downtown Manhattan. We have chosen to feature this city as we think it is a great time to visit.

Whilst the weather is still cold, it is quieter than usual after the holiday rush. Hotels and restaurants have great discounts available during this month so be sure to research before travel.

Weather in Toronto (January)

Weather wise, expect nothing different than New York so be prepared for the cold, ice and snow, all of which highly likely during a winter trip.

January average temperature: -2 degrees C (28 degrees F)
January average high: -1 degrees C (31 degrees F)
January average low: -7 degrees C (20 degrees F)

What to Pack

In a previous article, we featured visiting the great city of Minneapolis, Minnesota during the winter. The same with Toronto, outside it is extremely cold but all places have great heating systems so for comfort layers are great. Here is a list of things to pack:

  • Hat, scarf and gloves.
  • Waterproof footwear, ideally boots.
  • Heavy Winter Jacket
  • Vest
  • Thermals

What To Do

Whilst there are many things to do in this vibrant city , on your way from New York to Toronto, a highlight is to visit the Niagra Falls, only 2 hours away from the city.

CN Tower

The standout on the skyline in Toronto is the CN Tower consider one the best buildings in the world. The 1,815 foot tower providers viewers the access to view the full city and the surrounding areas. The elevators take tourists to the top in less than 60 seconds and offer 4 different level views, one of which is the highest in the world. Skating Rink at Harbourfront Centre:

Whilst Canada has no shortage of places to skate, the skating rink at the Habourfront Centre is the largest in the country. This is great for those wanting to do something free and in a great place. Runs until March.

Shopping

Coming from New York, people might think not to go shopping in this city. However you will be surprised because Canada offers exceptional sales, especially during the start of winter after the holidays. Nothing beats being in a different city and watching the local team. With this whenever the Toronto Maple Leafs or Raptors are playing then this is the place to be.  With a 32 foot screen and over 100 other TV’s this place gets extremely busy.
